On the road to Woodhold

(Sorry for the delay. I should be able to update this thread now at least as much as the other one, so away we go)
The walk, strenuous at first, get easier at night, as the cool breeze cleans the sweat from brows and necks. Laggy, used to traveling by night, is sure of foot, but others, more inclined toward daytime travel, stumble at times over rocks and roots, but never complain. The conversations are light in nature, at least this far form the destination and above ground.
By the time the sun again begins its ascent, people are glad for the break, weariness having set in. Laggy, pleased by the first night's travel, seems pleased by reaching the mouth of a cave, which he says is a good entrypoint into an extensive tunnel system. He sets his pack just within and motions others to do the same.
"Rest," he says. "I will wait up for the others."

It is difficult sleeping by day, with the sun beating down, and many rest fitfully while others never sleep.
"It'll be easier undeground," Laggy says, and then returns to humming softly to himself.
Perhaps it was the travel and lack of sleep that dulled the senses, but for whatever reason, no one saw the man approach, who stands now, ten feet or so away, an overly large cloak, black and red, covering the majority of his face. What can be seen looks human, and he says, "They're probably dead you know."
He remains standing there, unmoving, waiting to converse.

(OOG Sorry for not being around, I started my job Monday and I was totally exhausted last week)
As the group journeys through the night, Esmerelda's eyes seem to grow more and more haunted as it brings to mind another series of nights spent fleeing Haven. When Laggy instructs them to rest, she goes to a corner of the cave and wraps herself in her cloak, but it is hard to tell whether she sleeps at all.
When the man appears, she sits up with a start. Standing slowly, she moves to a safe distance behind Trusk. Eyeing the man coldly, she says softly, "Given the circumstances the world is currently in, your statement applies to a lot of people. Could you be a bit more specific?"

When Laggy instructs the group to rest, Fionna finds a soft spot, being careful to stay near everyone else. It can be seen by all, that she is not only exhausted, but seemingly more nervous. Only once before has the young lady been so far from home. She can be seen riffling through her bags counting the potions she carries to be sure they are still there.
When the man appears, She jumps to her feet to a place behind Trusk. Despite her cultures feelings of Orcs, she knows all too well how well this one has kept her safe. She readies her staff and places a hand inside the bag at her hip. She looks to her friend Esmerelda for guidance and keeps a silent eye on the stranger.

"I tend to think the opposite. And since I do not know you, I'm going to believe what I think over what you say."
Esmerelda glances at Laggy to see how he is taking the new comer's arrival.
"What makes you so certain that they are no longer numbered amongst the living?"

Laggy stands, armed and ready, though his face portrays no emotions.
The man responds to Esmerelda. "They've been gone a long time. Really, how long does it take to figure out if someone is following you or not? They've clearly run into trouble and are most likely dead."
And then he turns to Trusk. "Sorry, let me say that another way so you understand. Tall squishy and hairy squishy have gone bye bye. Dey not come back."

When the man speaks to Trusk, a spark of anger flashes in Esmerelda's eyes. Those who know her well see her fierce temper trying to rise to the surface. Taking a deep calming breath, in order to enure her emotions are under control, Esmerelda pauses before speaking again.
"I really don't see why the whereabouts of my companions are of any matter of importance to you, sir. And I find your treatment of my friend rather annoying. You do not have to speak down to him. All that does is lower yourself in my eyes.
"Is there a reason you have stopped to converse with us? If so, please state your business. If not, please move on and let us attend to our own."

(Sorry for the further delay, sick kids do that)
"I apologize for my inconsiderate tongue, my lady. I understand that women can be very emotional and thus I should watch my words in the future. As for my business, I own these lands, and thus I thought I should see who's using them."
Laggy whispers to Esmerelda during this, "This does not appear to be a fight he can win, so it troubles me that he keeps baiting us."
The cloaked man appears to not hear the comment, or perhaps not care.
