A Score to Settle

A cold bed and a warm ale. Blood stains the walls, but it looks like the Bar Keep is standing...for once.

"This is the fundamental problem with your race. You live longer than most, you work harder than most, and yet you wish for nothing more than instant gratification when you make your 'payments.'"

~: Head bowed he just belted out another chuckle at the Dwarf's expense, having just listened to him rant, rave and above all things cry about his misfortunes. He rose up, slapped one bare hand on his knee and just kept his dichromatic eyes on the bearded warrior. There might have been a moment where his conscience warned him of his words. But then he very rarely ever listened to that thing. So he pressed on. :~

"I would bet you at this very moment Chance and Morgan are traveling with the very Silvani that saw fit to curse you. And I would bet that, knowing Chance and Morgan as well as I've managed they're going to make good on whatever deal it is your short-sightedness brought on."

~: He stood from his stool, closed the gap between himself and Salvatore. There was no need for a posture of combat, just mild humor and a relaxed stance. Shoulders low, head high, not arrogant but perhaps a bit more informed. He looked upon the Dwarf, the maw of his mask clicking as he spoke. :~

"And I know, I KNOW, if you had dealt with the 'situation' in your way, you'd find yourself so weakened by their magic breathing would be the most laboring action of your life."

~: Arms folded across his chest, the Valkyn'Vi perhaps a bit upset as evident by the poison in his voice. Truth be told he rather enjoyed Chance and Morgan's company, and in their absence wasn't about to have them be slandered and threatened so. :~

:sapphire nods to Alice and smiles slightly, there was something about the soft spoken young blacksmith that sat across from him. he didn't quite understand what it was but it was....pleasing.:

"you're quite welcome, Alice was it?"

:sapphire turned back around and listened as legion berated the Salvatore, he just sighed and shot a narrowed eye glare at his fellow valkyn kin:

"it is unfortunate such an act has befallen you master dwarf. in my experience i have also found the silvani to be :now looking directly at legion:
troublesome. "
:his glance shifted back to Salvatore:

"have you spoken to the queen yet about this issue?"

~: Sapphire's glare and determination to enunciate a specific word had a snort leave Legion, his body bristling slightly. Eyes flicked inside their black hollows from Salvatore to Sapphire, past Sapphire...before they closed. He took a breath. He pivoted on his heels, returned to his seat. Sat down in much the same manner before he had stood up. :~

~: Elbows on his knees, canted forward and bent at the waist. Eyes of flame and ice opened once more, and his tone had softened. :~

"They can be, yes...but I'd rather you give Chance and Morgan adequate time. You've dealt with the Silvani before, master Dwarf. Their matters are complex, antiquated. Chance will come through. Especially if you'd already made your payment."

~: Reserved, relaxed, almost a completely different person that fell silent now. He watched, practically a statue of white marble seated upon the bar stool. :~

"I think ya might be missing my point, little fella", Salvatore replied to the pale Valkyn'Vi. "I should'na have had to make a deal in the first place. The Silvani might be needing a reminding that they ain't the only ones walking on this here piece o'earth and start showing some respect to other's customs."

The elder Tenhammer walked around the bar, grabbed a large tankard and filled it to a perfect head with stout.

"We Dwarves ain't much on forgetting things. Apparently the Silvani are havin' a hard time remembering what happened last time they got 'out of control'. Now I ain't saying what was done to them was right, especially the women and children. Being hunted down like dogs ain't got no honor to it. But some people got it in their heads it would be a better place without them, and they would've probably been successful, lessen the Cataclysm hadn't stopped the hatred. But they seem to be starting along that path again."

Salvatore looked longingly at the full tankard, then reached into his pouch producing a gold coin and slammed it on the counter. He then put the foaming beverage to his lips and drank deeply, the heavy liquid dripping onto the wisps of his beard, even washing a few away.

When the tankard was empty, he let out a loud belch, and began filling the tankard again.

"The Silvani in these parts seem partial to playing tricks on the Dwarves here about. Dwarves understand a good joke. Perhaps the Silvani just want us to add our sense of humor to the fray?"
If you want it we got it. If we don't got it, we'll get it.

Alice’s gaze moved from Sapphire to linger on Legion. She was very thankful that he did not move to make the situation worse…that none of them did, in fact. In her opinion, empathic listening and honesty in a situation did far more than aggravated violence. She truly sympathized with the dwarf’s plight, but she never approved of violence or encouraged it in any situation.

She nodded to Legion appreciatively when he spoke his piece about Chance. True, she didn’t know the whole situation, the whole story…but she certainly didn’t approve of Chance being called a cheat, not while he wasn’t even here to defend himself or explain the situation. She knew very little of her Guthrie acquaintance, but she knew he was not one to go bad on a deal. She also trusted Legion’s judgment in this particular case, considering the Guthrie and he spent much of their time together giving each other hell. If he was willing to defend Chance…well, that was enough for her.

Alice watched the dwarf empty his tankard, hoping the good stout would calm his nerves. She knew that a dwarf’s beard was the symbol of his honor, his Dwarfhood. To remove it was the greatest insult imaginable. Now hearing the good dwarf sympathizing with what horrible deeds had been done to the Sylvani years before, Alice felt confident that he would be open to her kindness.

She set her sewing aside and moved to the dwarf’s side. In her sweetest voice, she said, “It certainly seems like you have been dealt insult to injury. I am sorry for your beard. However, I am very familiar with curses, Good Dwarf. They are never easy to fix, and I have always known Chance to be a Guthrie of his word, particularly when it comes to curses.” Quickly, she added, “I can assure you, that once Chance gets back from the Caravan, we will most certainly move to resolve this problem…without violence.”

~: He listened to Salvatore, he had nothing to reply with immediately. He'd met on good terms with the Silvani, but he knew of the dark nature they could call upon if the need arose. He'd employed their services before..he knew the results. But he also knew results could be expected. He would have spoken such, but Alice stood and addressed the Dwarf. :~

~: Through the holes in his mask he had caught her gaze, her nod of approval. Learning, slowly but surely. Maybe he'd surprise Chance by getting "dressed up," a bit classy if just to show the Silvani he was capable of such. However as she spoke, well, he couldn't help but laugh when she finished her piece. :~

"Alice...Alice...heh....Chance isn't a Guthrie...2 different people here, hehe...Chance is a Silvani, Morgan is the Guthrie......hmhmmm..."

~: A few more chuckles before he contained himself, one hand on his bare chest just below the crimson tattoo above his sternum. It looked for all the world like an angry red slash in his ivory skin. :~

"Silvani can be blunt, thats for sure...so, and correct me if I'm wrong. This Silvani insulted you. And you assaulted him. Well thats pretty high crime to them. I've worked with the Silvani before...they make good on their deals. Some are more delicate than others."

"Before the caravans return I'm sure Chance and Morgan will have your problem solved, especially if you've paid them whatever price they asked. If they haven't...well I'll help you remind them. How about that?"

A hooded figured that had previously remained in the background in the hallway near the back door to the inn stepped forward. A voice cold and bareley controlled to withhold its anger came from with the hood. "There will never be hunting of the Sylvani in my kingdom. Ever."

Esmerelda pushed back her hood and strode into the room to face Tenhammers. "I am sorry for your affliction. I know what it means for one of your race to be without a beard. But I will thank you for not ever mentioning the hunting of my mother's people again. Who was the Sylvani you had the disagreement with? I will go and speak to them personally and see that this matter is resolved, if their caravan is nearby. When Chance returns I will also speak with him about the matter."

She smiles at Alice. "It is good to see someone thinking with their mind, rather than with their weapon. Thank you, Alice, it is a refreshing change to see. As for the Witch Hunters, they were an organization in the Kingdom of Silverthorne before the cataclysm. They were used to hunt down and eliminate rogue mages within the kingdom. At that time all mages had to belong to the Mage's Guild or they were eliminated. A friend and comrade of mine, Aurora Darksbane is a witch hunter of the old code. Her grandmother, Kimberlynn, was a very famous witch hunter. But Aurora has been tending to matters in her homeland of Caldedonia and has been gone for several moons. If you like, I should be happy to introduce you to her when she returns."

Looking at Sapphire, she shakes her head. "You really should do your research on people before you make assumptions about them. Witch Hunters are a most welcome occupation in the kingdom. In fact one of my magistrates, Captain Jinn Steele is a witch hunter. So you are most mistakesn about me allowing them in the kingdom."

She then turns to Korrigan.

"When you have a moment, I wanted to go over the wording of a treaty with you. I meant to come down here incognito, but well," she grins sheepishly. "I suppose this means I'm getting an escort back to the keep when we're done," she says softly under her breath.

"I think it would be offensive not to offer an escort back to the Keep."

~: His eyes had bounced from person to person as Esmerelda, Queen of Haven had either spoken words of kindness or cold truth. He hadn't chuckled at a single put-down, well at least outside. No, he was actually finding it quite astounding, seeing the Queen in action and laying down the law. :~

"As for the caravan, it isn't anywhere near. I tried looking for it when I realized I had woken up late. Missed it my a good many miles."

~: Bare ivory shoulders rolled again as he leaned back once more. If the Queen wanted an escort she could ask. She knew that was all she had to do to bring along the Valkyn'Vi. His head lolled back, eyes closed as his black mask aimed towards the ceiling in silent contemplation. :~

*Korrigan remains silent as Esmerelda speaks, a look of approval showing from behind his tankard as he drinks. Finishing the last of his ale as he speaks to him, he removes his hat and bows.*

:sapphire sat as annoyance flared into anger as he watched the cloaked figure reveal herself as the queen of the land he had recently traveled to. he breathed in and pulled the pipe back out, packing it furiously as he watched her intently.

" and i would have it that YOU research those you wish to have walk amongst you... before you are so quick to banish them... Your Highness!!"

:sapphires words were biting but still he tried to remain as respectful as possible seeing that he was in the presents of a young woman. he looked at alice and bowed his head to her respectfully before shooting a glare at legion and then offering the same gesture. to the queen of haven he offered nothing but a narrow eyed stare and a hard bow of his head as he quickly turned away so much as his hip scabbard snapped across the floor of the inn as he exited.:

*His eyebrow rising as Sapphire speaks, Korrigan's visage shifts from pleasant formality to icy steel. When he speaks to Sapphire, he does so slowly and with measured tones.*

"I will say this exactly once. This is a free land, and a man's opinions are his own, but any man who dares to rebuke my Queen and slight her title under my roof will make an enemy of me."

*Though his hands remain at his sides, the way the Innkeeper's weight shifts as he faces Sapphire betrays the coiled springs in his muscles.*

"I'll presume that stare wasn't a threat and that you're just having a bad day. I'll presume you made a mistake and accidentally used "Your Highness" instead of "Your Majesty". I'll presume you didn't intend insult, and I'll presume the sincere apology you're about to make is heartfelt... because if the next words out of your mouth aren't 'I'm very sorry, Your Majesty' than I'm going to start presuming other things. Things you won't like."

:sapphire had almost set foot outside the door until he heard korrigan's icy words. he listened to korrigan's icy words, his back still turned and let out a slow and annoyed sigh.

"well..." :sapphire said as he slowly turned to face the innkeeper:

"it appears plainly to me that i have in some way overstepped a boundary and for that,: he slowly turns to look at esmerelda:

i apologize... your majesty."

:sapphire swallowed hard in between "i apologize" and "your majesty" as if he had just swallowed something ill tasting. though it was very clear he was still annoyed, his words were genuine and sincere. sapphire crossed his arms while he waited at the door.:

With his hand gripping his sword so tight, the tendons on his arm were clearly visible, the Lord Marshall strides into the center of the Inn and stands next to the Queen. His posture is challenging, yet he makes no move to draw his blade.

"It would be best if you choose your words more carefully in the future, mercenary. There is one Lord Marshall of Haven, and I assure you, he is no mage. And while all here are entitled to their own opinion and freewill, the next time you feel the urge to openly question my Queen's decision, on any matter, do so with a bit more tact."

As his posture becomes a bit more relaxed, he draws himself up to his full height but never releases his grip on his sword.

"If you were any outside of the Kin, I would challenge you to an Honor Duel. As it stands, I will not, but do not expect my leniency to extend forever Youngling."

*The ice in Korrigan's voice thaws as quickly as it appeared, and he gives Sapphire an approving nod.*

"Good. I appreciate a man who is willing to admit his mistakes. The proper title for a Queen is "Your Majesty", and you never take issue with the Sovereign in public. Lucky for us we have a Queen who is kind enough to meet with us and let us air our complaints. All of Haven depends on the Queen and her assigns, and if she isn't respected within her own lands, she certainly won't get the respect she needs with outsiders. Keep that in mind."

*Korrigan acknowledges Paer'an with a tilt of his hat*

Alice gracefully acknowledged the Queen's words and her thanks with a small curtsy/bow. The moment Sapphire spoke his piece and everyone began to show their disapproval of his words, she swallowed hard and took a step back...

Once again, she hoped that no one would do anything to aggravate the situation and turn it to violence. She breathed a sigh of relief when Sapphire apologized and the others acknowledged it. Alice was also sure to keep in her memory that "Your Majesty" was the correct term for the Queen.

When Alice first came to the land of Haven, she was terrified of even coming near the Keep, having always had a great and well-reasoned fear of monarchs. Now, however, she had quite a lot of respect for Esmeralda, considering the Queen did allow her subjects to voice their opinions and concerns to her directly (without fear of losing their heads), and the Queen came with them on several adventures, which was far unlike any monarch Alice had ever read about. There was one other reason she had come to trust the Queen and allow herself to enter the Keep without fear...but she had only ever voiced that once, and only to Serena, who quickly advised her to keep that fact to herself.

She gazed at the floor in quiet reflection, remaining respectful of the situation as it unfolded.
