Your thoughts on the orc

Post by GM_Chris »

When we ran some numbers we felt orc boon was a little weak in comparrison to other races.

What are your thoughts?

I'm for a new boon. We have ideas. I dont know if I should share them or not, it could taint the results

Lets leave the new ideas blank for a bit and just see what people think.. They know we have ideas... that should be scary enough ;)

you should add an "Eh, I don't care. Both sound good." poll option.

I am against giving any race MULTIPLE boons.

It either needs to be fixed/improved, or replaced. Or of course left alone.

Not sure who else has played an orc long term aside from Tonia, that reads these boards....but I have NO issue with the press as a boon, but if you wanna ADD something else...saweet! Personaly orc could use disease resistannce or immunity, as ive always seen em as living, generally, in less than healthy conditions so id have to think they are used to icky microbes. Hell Id imagine they woule eat just about anything in general even carrion...

Although I have not played an Orc in FH, I did play one plenty in CARPS, so I do feel somewhat qualified to enter this conversation. I think something FEAR related (resistance, generate, ?) would be in order. I think although Press is a great thing to have when you need it. Admittedly, I am not the greatest in FH stuff, having only played a couple of times, but, Press looks kinda weak to me.

My two cents.

I really think deciding what boon a race should have based on how much its used or if its as good as the other races goes against the core of what role playing is. The decision should be based on what the race SHOULD have or what is logical with respect to how they live and function.

I always felt press was perfect since a massive orc army is often protrared driving right through other forces. That has press written all over it.

I see your point about Press. And it could be read a couple of ways. The thing

*soapbox alert*

that I love about FH is the freedom to do with your character whatever you wish as long as the mechanics stay the same. For example, Press means mechanically the same thing whether your character is physically pushing someone over with brute strength or being so menacing and intimidating that they have to step back. I love that you can pick that based on our wishes for you character

*off of soapbox*

but on a serious note. My thoughts on nixing press was a combo of use IG and "fit". Yes, Press does definitely fit the Orc. I was thinking that there may be something that fits as well, but brings the race in line with other races. Part of the reason that so few ppl (IMHO) play Orcs is the crappy boon. The others just don't want to be orcs (RRAAGHHH!) I like press as well, it just seems very costly, I mean a LP to make someone move or stop yourslef from moving? If I had 50 LP it wouldn't matter. However, I have 3. It matters. I know Orcs have 2 base (maybe, if that doesn't change), but some things are an easy SURE for spending LP on. I don't feel press is one of them.

now its been som etime since i played Jux, and didnt even know they changed the press to cost a life...used to be a free one. The life point cost needs to be nixed, its just silly.

I'm for keeping it as is. Press is a very powerful skill in caves. When you are fighting tough opponents, keeping them from getting to your weaker party members is very useful and sometimes just moving past a threat is simpler than actually beating it. Plus, it's also helpful in avoiding charging issues as you just press and they can't run through your line via a mechanic rather than a rule.

Course I won't play an orc is I don't wanna be green. :)
My posts in no way reflect that of anyone else nor are they in any way official.

Press is a fine skill for a 2 LP race, now if you're saying that you're going to go to 1 lp for every race then maybe press and the 2 minute bleed out need to be looked at but as long as they get an extra lp then the boon shouldn't be as useful. Having 2 boons is a bad precedent to set because the tsunotaurs boon would have to be ramped up too. And you'd still have balance issues.

I'm seeing a trend of things getting ramped up gradually except for soak. Not a good trend IMO because eventually soak will have to go(back) up, then you'll be trapped in a upward spiralling maelstrom trying to keep everything balanced.
