CARPS and Craic Wisely.

Post by Ug »

Two quick FYI's on this weekend.

1. CARPS is this weekend and we have introduced a new "Fast Track" program! Here is a summary of the new program:
CARPsians and potential CARPsians everywhere,

We have decided that in the interest of allowing new players to more quickly fit into the game and find their niche (as well as upping attendance), to make a special offer for new players in 2006.

This offer applies to 2006 only, to new players, new characters, and anyone who hasn't reached 250 character points. If the details below aren't clear, send an email to gm@carpsgame.com but the goal here is to help the lowest point total characters to 'catch up' to those above them and participate in more of the same plots and storylines.

CARPS uses a very soft cap system that doesn't have an early limit. Instead of reaching a quick 'ceiling', we have gradually increasing point costs for higher levels of skills. As you get more powerful, your progression slows down gradually. The quickest increase of power is therefore in the first 250 points... where characters are often termed 'newbies'. Although new players in any LARP take time to learn the lower structure, the social groups, and find their home, we are trying to propel people through this point range at an accelerated pace. Thus the 'newbies' won't be newbies on paper and in game power, just knowledge. So keep your caution, keep making those alliances and friendships, but know that your character will be useful to your chosen group or groups from day one.

Our current system is that you start with 45 character points, and gain 15 points per event. This rule will continue to apply for anyone over 250 character points.

For those players who started their characters in 2005 and earlier yet remain below 250 character points, ALL character points earned at a given event (15 for playing, more for journals, more for event evaluations, more for helping NPC camp, etc.) will be DOUBLED. This will continue to apply until you reach 250 character points or the year 2006 ends, whichever comes first. This offer MAY be extended, but show up, play, have fun, and it's not something you'll have to worry about, you'll be at 250 by the end of the year!

For those players who start their characters in 2006 or who are not yet at the 100 point mark, not only do you get the double advancement, but your character gets to start at or be immediately boosted to exactly 100 points. The point caps of merits and flaws is unchanged, but you have more points to play with at character creation or before next event.

This program should allow anyone who shows up at a CARPS event to feel more like they are contributing and therefore have more fun. Although plots and long term storylines exist and are being implemented for characters at all point levels, there will be more teamwork and more working together without anyone feeling insignificant.

Under this new system a new player starting in June could be at 300 or more points by the end of 2006... which would have taken almost to the end of 2007 without this program.

See you all on the board here, or in game. Expect more announcements to come!

PS - If you attempt to take this offer of 'fast track' points and try to keep them in a pool and apply them to a higher point character later, you will be heavily abused and you'll lose all those points. This program is to 'narrow the gap' in power only.
2. Craic Wisely is playing this weekend right next door to CARPS at the Ionia Free Fair! These are the finals to the Battle of the Celtic Bands, so make certain to show up and give your support to this most awesome band!! Here's the info from Craic Wisely:
It's a big week for us, to say the least. I'm going to go in reverse order for this newsletter.

Saturday, July 22: We are playing at the Battle of the Celtic Bands Finale at the Ionia Free Fair! If you've been following us for any amount of time recently, you know this already. But here are some more details:

When: Saturday, 7/22. The Battle starts at 3:30pm, we play at 5:30pm and the winner plays a "Victory Lap" from 8 to 9pm.

Entrance to the fair is apparently free, but parking is $5. Bring some extra cash for other amenities, and in case you have to spread out on the ground, be sure to pack a blanket. We hope to see tons of you guys there. One of the huge reasons we won our preliminary battle was you, and we want to repeat that this Saturday!

Here's the Free Fair's site:

And here's the site for the BOCB:

As a warm-up to the Battle, we're playing the Black Rose this coming Friday night at 9:30pm. Cover is $3, come early, stay late.

Thanks to all of you who came out to see us at the Taste of Grand Rapids show last Friday, 7/14. It was really hot out, and your presence there definitely helped!

See you this weekend.

Slainte,
Todd, Dave, Jonathan, Tim and Mike

Ok for those of us not going to CARPs. Car pooling??

I'm not sure if my family is coming or not, still trying to work out the day. We had discussed going to the Frederick Meijer Gardens in the morning, and letting the kids play in the Children's Garden. But we're members so its free for us.

Anyone else make plans yet?

Bummed I missed out, on both accounts. But there were NEVER any doubts as to the winners ;)
Mike: For the majority of you, choosing to use a packet instead of a weapon is a hindrance because your aims suck.

Travis: Crap he is on to me.
