the good ol days...

Post by Wyrmwrath »

I am trying to set the events of Kaylans backstory to a time line, but no clue how the passing years are recorded in game. Is the calinder dated from the cataclysm, some older event, whats the current year, that kind of thing.

If I remember correctly its based off the original CARP timeline +55 years. (50 years between CARPs and the Cataclysm, plus 5 years for the stabilization)
And the current CARPs date is just the current date -1000 years.

[2012-1000]+[50+5]= 1067* (post essence war)

* There was also a 'post-cataclysm' date that is equal to the number of years the game has been running (I cant remember how long its been) + 5 years.

[duration of FH]+5 = ____ (post cataclysm)

All this may or may not be true depending on what Chris and Mike have done over the last 4 years while Ive been gone.

I was told once that it had been somewhere near 12 years since the Cataclysm.

But I can't remember what year I played that it was told to me, lol!

So I would guess then it's been no more than 15 years after the joining of the One Magic.

I just checked, the assumption I was going under when writing Garritt's backstory for WH would put this year as the 15th year since the Cataclysm.

Todd is correct.

Though... when Corbyn was Duke, we used the Haven Reconing, which accounted the years since the cataclysm, and Haven't founding. So, it would be 11 HR this year (since the very first event was in 2001, I believe) ^_^

Wasn't the first event set several years after the cataclysm, though?

I only started in late 2007, so I've been foggy on the in-game date since then.

Assuming it was 2001 then it would be

1067 P.E.W. (Post Essence War, CARPs time)
16 P.C. (Post Cataclysm)
11 H.R. (Haven Reckoning)

Ok, My character Garritt came from a place where they had been measuring things post-cataclysm and I had this upcoming year as either 15 or 16, so it works out.

Cool for the P.E.W. dates, though. Ive been wondering about what "year" it is for Marcus, a character that had been in Haven since quite soon after the night of the Cataclysm up to the Night of the Burning Skulls, and most PCs look at me and give me the "who cares?" kind of look.

Thanks Todd and Christen!

Tonia and I attended the second event (as our first event) FH ran (Thats what I recall being told at the party she an I attended at Todds house) and that was late 2003, the same year my son was born.
Poke Taki and see what he recalls, his first event was our first event, and was pupotedly the second FH event ever run.

It MAY have been 2002... because the first event ever was in like... july, and the only one that year, because Wayne and I moved to Florida right after that and were gone for the next full FH season.

From what I was told, FH had run "a few" events prior to Brian, Tonia and I showing up. I got the impression that it had been around for more than one event previous to our arrival, but I could be wrong.

Ok that sounds likely as the first posts on this board seem to be 2003 and are talking about events that happened at our first or second event.

Haven existed before the Cataclysm. It just became a gathering point for survivors since it's land wasn't laid waste like most of the rest of the world. Reginald took charge of it shortly after the Cataclysm. So if you ask any (surviving) original inhabitants, you'd likely be told it it's been around for generations.

It was part of the Kingdom of Silverthorne, but no idea under which Duke, Baron, and Thane. There is a Haven on the CARPS map, but not within the Kingdom.

Ok, that clears things up. I was always under the impression that all the inhabitants were post-Cataclysm immigrants, and that as a constant basis for a backstory becomes a little stale (for me at least). That makes it much easier to write Marcus' back story, as he's a Joe-everyman turned "hero", so he could just have lived in Haven the whole time.

Makes it simple for a "new" character to know the year and general Silverthorne knowledge, rather than "this land is all new to me!" all the time.

My confusion is just in the fact we(ex wife and I) were told at our first event in 2003 (which we were told was the second FH run), that the cataclysm had happened 5 years prior.
