I still agree that if we move to coins, the stones should be worth something; used and unused. That way everyone who had mystic components would trade them back to Npc camp after their use. And those who don't need them would trade them straight back to Npc camp or give them to a spell caster. It's positive reinforcement for positive action. We'd most likely never have to pick up our crystals from the ground.

Agreed, you would have PCs doing the "Early Morning Harvest" A.K.A. Scouring the ground for dropped crystals and coins.
