Are you using a mobile device? If so, it's set to hide some things to save mobile bandwidth. Avatars are probably one of them.

I've installed some themes, and will install more, but if you don't like the default theme, you can change it by going to User Control Panel -> Board Preferences and changing "My Board Style"
